Understanding Medicare

The Medicare program consists of multiple plan types, some of which are offered by private insurance companies.

Medicare Part A

Provides hospital coverage. Most people who qualify for Medicare qualify for premium-free Medicare Part A, but you still have to pay out-of-pocket costs, including deductibles and coinsurance.

Medicare Part B

Provides medical coverage. You’ll need to pay a premium along with out-of-pocket costs, including deductibles and coinsurance.

Medicare Part C

Is Medicare Advantage. These are private Medicare plans that combine the coverage under Medicare Parts A and B into one plan. Most plans also include prescription drug coverage, and many offer hearing, dental, vision or other benefits. Premiums and out-of-pocket costs vary from plan to plan; some premiums are as low as $0. However, you still have to pay your Medicare Part B premium.

Medicare Part D

Provides prescription drug coverage. Premiums and out of pocket costs vary from plan to plan. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan with prescription coverage, you do not need to buy a separate Medicare Part D plan.

Medigap Plans

Medigap Plans provide supplemental coverage. These plans work with Medicare Parts A and B to help you control your out-of-pocket expenses.

Customizing Your Medicare Program

Medicare enrollees need to decide between Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and Medicare Advantage.

  • If you stay in Original Medicare, you can select a Medicare Part D plan to provide drug coverage. Beware that Original Medicare has high out-of-pocket costs (20% for most care covered under Part B) with no out-of-pocket cap. If you’re worried about your out-of-pocket costs, you can buy a Medigap plan.
  • If you decide to enroll in Medicare Advantage, you can select from the plans available in your area. These plans can have major differences in terms of costs and coverage, so compare your options carefully.

FAQs

01I don’t take any prescriptions. Do I need Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage?

If you don’t have prescription drug coverage, it’s a good idea to buy a Medicare Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage for two reasons. First, you may develop a health condition that requires prescription drug treatment during the year. Second, when you eventually decide to buy coverage, you may face a late enrollment penalty.
No. Medigap plans, also called Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, are designed to work with Original Medicare. These plans do not work with Medicare Advantage.
Medicare enrollees are given an opportunity to change their Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D plans, or to switch back to Original Medicare, every year during the annual enrollment period that runs from October 15 to December 7. Switching Medigap plans or buying a Medigap plan after your Medigap Open Enrollment Period can be more challenging because your application may be subject to medical underwriting, and you could be denied coverage or charged more.
